Respond to the Email to Complete Registration

Postby The Powers That Be » Sat Sep 27, 2014 11:00 am

WELCOME: To complete registration, you need to respond to the email that the System will send you, signifying your willingness to to follow the Forum Rules.

IMPORTANT: To complete registration, you need to email the Administrator at "1allthingscomputer (at) gmail (dot) com", signifying your willingness to to follow the Forum Rules. The primary rule is that you agree not to post spam on this forum. This forum's URL address made it into the sweat-shops of the East, where they must have armies of youngsters answering the Captch phrase all day long. This forum was getting blasted by dozens of Spam Registrations once it's address made it to the sweat shops. Therefore, we switched over to a Q&A type of spambot blocker, which requires that people be able to read and understand English in order to register. From now on, if you register and there is no associated email from you stating your willingness NOT to post spam on this forum, your username and registration will simply be deleted. It's easy to do mass deletions of unregistered users in phpBB3.

You must reply to the Registration Email signifying your willingness to comply with the Forum Rules, in order to complete the registration process. Therefore, you must supply an email address that you actually look at, in order to see the copy of the message that the System will send to you. Users who fail to complete the registration process will have their accounts deleted.

After sending out dozens of confirmation emails to people in Russia and China and receiving no response from any of them, we realized that these people have no intention of providing relevant or useful content. Their only intention is to use this forum as a place to do their off topic advertising spam. There's plenty of indication that none of them have read this post. This reality is serving as the perfect barrier to keep these people out.

Unsolicited off topic advertising spam will be deleted and The Perpetrator will be banned. Freeloaders are not welcome here. Quality on topic Content is what makes this world go around. Please, link to your Business or your Ads in your Signature.

We are perfectly fine with having this forum remain nothing more than a personal blog for an elite few. This forum was created primarily for the educational value, and not to make money.

From now on, we are not going to send out the confirmation email containing the Forum Rules to each person who applies. It's too time consuming to do so. Instead, if you are sincere in your desire to participate on this forum and agree not to post advertising and spam on this forum, then Email the administrator by sending your request to join to:

It has been fascinating to observe that the only ones who want to be members of this forum are the foreign nationals (mostly Russian and Chinese) who are unable to read these messages. It must look like a candy store to them.

When they first found the place, we had it set on automatic registration. They immediately started posting off-topic advertising spam. Their posts had nothing to do with the topic that they were posting in, and their ads were in broken and often unintelligible English. Our hosting friend told us that it would happen, and it took a month before it happened and we got on their list. They have a list of new 'sucker sites' that they share among each other. Once your website gets on the list, then the flow of off-topic advertising spam is non-stop as is their registration to advertise for free on your website. Once the freeloaders find your website, there is no end to their spam.

Once we were on the target list, then we had to switch to having them get administrator approval before their newly registered account is activated. For a month we sent these people a confirmation email with the requirement that they respond to the email in order to get their account fully activated. NOBODY responded to the email asking to have their account activated, apparently because they were unable to read the email. Furthermore, some of them had used dead email addresses to register. We set the foreign spammers aside as unregistered guests. After we got a few dozen of them with no response to the confirmation email, then we just deleted them all. That was a big mistake.

The same group just proceeded to re-register again. At that point, we stopped sending the confirmation email, because we knew that they couldn't read it or wouldn't respond to it or agree with it. So, what do we do now?

Well, we decided that rather than waste time sending the confirmation email out, we would just activate the accounts of the foreign spammers, and then immediately ban their accounts by username, email address, and IP address. That way they are registered and they can't register again, yet they are unable to post their off-topic advertising spam. That seems to be working. They never read this stuff to learn that all they have to do is to respond to the email they receive agreeing to follow the forum rules, and their user account will then be activated like normal. In our signature, we give the key that they need to follow in order to have their account fully activated, but NONE of them actually read this forum. They are only here to post their off-topic advertising spam and nothing more. It's not even clear that they can read English.

It has been an interesting learning experience for us. This forum was created primarily for its educational value, and it has been quite an education so far.

Here we are a few months later, and the Captcha is no longer working to stop the Spammers from Registering. For months, we would ban the email, the IP address, and the username for every person who registered and didn't provide an associated email signifying their willingness to obey the Forum Rules. We then deactivated their account. It worked fine enough for a couple of months, then our forum link made it into a whole new area that was different than before (the massive sweat-shops of the East), and suddenly we were getting a dozen registration requests a day from Spammers all of which were willing to answer the Captcha phrase.

We realize now that the easiest thing for us to do is to just delete every registration that we receive unless that registration comes with an associated email asking to join the forum and agreeing to follow the forum rules. The days of catering to these people are over. We also switched over to a Q&A style of Registration and we'll see how that goes. So far, so good!

You have to be able to read English and understand English in order to successfully register for this Forum. If you really want to register and are having problems registering, then email us at: "1allthingscomputer (at) gmail (dot) com". We definitely want people to register if they are going to participate like normal human beings. But, we don't want them if they are spambots. Nobody wants spambots, whether they are the living and breathing variety or the other kind.
